The Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in Venice is the oldest Lutheran congregation in Italy and even one of the oldest outside of Germany. Martin Luther himself wrote a letter to Protestants in Venice and in Veneto. The history of Germans in Fondaco, the trading company of German merchants in Venice, is closely linked to the adventurous and varied history of the community. Today, with around 80 members, it is one of the smallest congregation worldwide. The former oratory of the “Holy Guardian Angel” (Scuola dell ‘Angelo Custode) from the 18th century – near the Rialto Bridge in the Cannaregio district – now serves as a church.
